Laomedon
Family: Troy · Role: king · First appears: Apollodorus, Library 2.5
🌐 Also appears in: The Iliad (as Laomedon) · The Metamorphoses of Ovid (as Laomedon)
Laomedon is named as the child of Heracles and Meline, and also as the son of Ilus and Eurydice. He married Strymo, daughter of Scamander, and had five sons—Tithonus, Lampus, Clytius, Hicetaon, and Podarces—and three daughters, Hesione, Cilla, and Astyoche. He was also the father of Bucolion, Proclia, Aethylla, and Medesicaste, and is identified as a parent of Priam.
Laomedon employed Apollo and Poseidon, who “assumed the likeness of men and undertook to fortify Pergamum for wages.” After they completed the fortification, he did not pay them. In another account, Hesione was to be exposed to be devoured by a sea monster. Laomedon was also among the suitors of Penelope, listed with the suitors who came from Zacynthos.
At Ilium, once the siege was laid, Laomedon marched against the ships and killed Oicles, but was driven back by Heracles’ troops and besieged. Heracles captured the city and killed Laomedon and his sons, except Podarces: “when he had taken the city and shot down Laomedon and his sons, except Podarces”.
