Le Morte d'Arthur

Sir Aglovale

Also known as: Aglavale / Aglovale · Family: Pellinore family · Role: knight · First appears: Book VII, Chapter XXVII

Sir Aglovale, also called Aglavale, was a knight of the Pellinore family and a nephew of King Arthur. In Book VII he encountered Sir Brian de les Isles and Grummore Grummursum as rivals. By Book X, King Pellinore was identified as his father: “Sir Aglovale was his first son begotten in wedlock.” He was brother to Sir Tor, Sir Lamorak, Dornar, Sir Percivale, Sir Dornard, and Sir Durnore.

On the sixth day recorded in Book X, Sir Dornard and Aglovale struck two opposing knights and fell with them from their horses, after which Sir Lamorak defeated the opposing knights and remounted his brothers. In Book XI, Aglovale joined Sir Gawaine, Sir Uwaine, Sir Sagramore, and Sir Percivale in the search for Sir Launcelot, undertaken at the urging of King Arthur and Queen Guenever. After Sir Lamorak was slain, Aglovale and Sir Percivale mourned him.

When Goodewin had Aglovale’s squire killed in retaliation for Aglovale’s slaying of Sir Gawdelin, Aglovale and Sir Percivale avenged the death: Aglovale defeated and beheaded Goodewin, then helped carry the squire to a priory for burial. Later, Sir Percivale secretly left to continue the quest for Sir Launcelot, and Aglovale answered, “He departed from me unkindly.” Aglovale later rode with Sir Griflet, and at Carlisle he was among the knights slain by Sir Launcelot during Dame Guenever’s rescue.
