Greek Mythology

Agelaus

Role: son of Temenus · First appears: Apollodorus, Library 2.7

🌐 Also appears in: The Odyssey (as Agelaus)

Agelaus is named as a son of Temenus, alongside Eurypylus and Callias, and as a sibling of Hyrnetho. Temenus favoured Hyrnetho and her husband Deiphontes over his sons, leading the sons to hire men to murder him; afterward, the army awarded the kingdom to Hyrnetho and Deiphontes. He is also described as a son of Heracles and Omphale, from whom the family of Croesus was descended.

At Ida, Priam ordered his infant son Paris exposed, and Agelaus, serving as the appointed servant, carried out the exposure. After finding Paris safe and seeing him nursed by a bear for five days, Agelaus took him away, raised him as his own son on his farm, and named him Paris. Later, Agelaus was among the suitors who courted Penelope.
