At birth, Priam ordered the infant Paris exposed on Ida, but Agelaus rescued him after finding him safe and raised him as his own son on his farm. Paris later married Oenone, who had learned prophecy from Rhea and warned him not to sail for Helen; she also told him to come to her if he was wounded, because she alone could heal him.
Hera offered him rule over all men, Athena promised victory in war, and Aphrodite offered him Helen’s hand. Paris persuaded Helen to leave with him from Sparta, then fought Menelaus in single combat and was carried away by Aphrodite when he was losing. During the war, he shot Achilles in the ankle with Apollo at the Scaean gate; after the war had lasted ten years, Philoctetes, cured by Podalirius, returned and shot Paris.
