The Five Books of Moses

Hoglah

Family: Manasseh · Role: daughter of Zelophehad · First appears: Numbers 26

In Numbers 26, Hoglah is named as one of Zelophehad’s daughters: “and the names of the daughters of Zelophehad were Mahlah, and Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.” In Numbers 27, Moses brings the sisters’ cause before God, who grants them an inheritance among their father’s brethren.

By Numbers 36, God commands that the daughters may marry whom they choose, but only within their father’s tribe. Hoglah marries alongside Mahlah, Tirzah, Milcah, and Noah into the families of Manasseh’s sons, so their inheritance remains within the tribe of their father.
