The Five Books of Moses

Tirzah

Family: Manasseh · Role: daughter of Zelophehad · First appears: Numbers 26

In Numbers 26, Tirzah is named as one of the daughters of Zelophehad, alongside Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, and Milcah. In Numbers 27, Moses brings their cause before God, who grants the daughters an inheritance among their father’s brethren: “The daughters of Zelophehad speak right.”

By Numbers 36, God commands that the daughters may marry whom they think best, but only within their father’s tribe. Tirzah and her sisters marry their cousins, Zelophehad’s brothers’ sons, so that their inheritance remains within Manasseh.
