Pausanias' Description of Greece

Manticlus

Family: Messenian · Role: son of Theoclus · First appears: Book 4 · Chapter 21

At Eira, Manticlus rushed to defend the walls alongside his father, Theoclus, and other Messenian leaders. The next morning, as Aristomenes ordered a retreat, he appointed Manticlus and Gorgus to lead the withdrawing women and children.

In Book 4, Chapter 23, Aristomenes declined to lead a colony and appointed Gorgus and Manticlus its leaders. After Anaxilas conveyed the Messenians to Sicily, Manticlus and Gorgus pleaded with him not to force them to harm the suppliants of Zancle. The suppliants were taken from the altars, and the two peoples pledged to live together; the town was renamed Messene. Manticlus built a temple of Hercules for the colony, with a statue outside the fort called Hercules Manticlus.
