Perieres
Family: Greek · Role: father of Aphareus · First appears: Book 2 · Chapter 21
Perieres was the son of Æolus. After his death, Medusa, with whom he had lived since her virginity, married Œbalus. In a later time, when the descendants of Polycaon had died out, Perieres was made king.
With Gorgophone, daughter of Perseus, Perieres had Aphareus and Leucippus. The Messenians called Aphareus the uterine brother of Tyndareus, and said Tyndareus fled to him in Messenia; they also attributed Leucippus to Perieres. Pisus, founder of Pisa, was said to be Perieres’ son and Æolus’ grandson.
At Zancle, Perieres and Cratæmenes built a fort and made the town their headquarters for expeditions by land and sea; the colonists later changed its name from Zancle to Messene.
