Pausanias' Description of Greece

Anaxilas

Family: Rhegium · Role: king · First appears: Book 4 · Chapter 23

In Book 4, Chapter 23, Anaxilas was king at Rhegium and fourth in descent from Alcidamidas, who had migrated from Messene to Rhegium. He offered the Messenians land and assistance, and conveyed them to Sicily when they accepted. At Zancle, Gorgus and Manticlus asked him not to compel them to act cruelly toward Greeks; they prevented the slaughter of the suppliants, and the two peoples thereafter dwelt together as one.

By Book 5, Chapter 26, Micythus, formerly Anaxilas’s slave, had become his treasurer. After Anaxilas’s death, Micythus went to Tegea.
