Jacob

Family: Israelite · Role: ancestor · First appears: Matthew 1

As an Israelite ancestor, Jacob appears in Matthew 1 through his family line: Isaac and Matthan are named as his parents, while Joseph the husband of Mary is named as his son. In Matthew 22, Jesus invokes him when declaring God to be the God of the living: “I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?” Luke 3 also places Jacob in the genealogy through his son.

At Sychar in John 4, Jacob is connected with Joseph the patriarch through the parcel of ground he gave him. In Acts 7, at the second time Joseph the patriarch was recognized by his brothers, he summoned Jacob and all their kindred to Egypt. Romans 9 recalls Jacob’s mother Rebecca, his brother Esau, and God’s declaration, “Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.” Hebrews 11 records that Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau, and places Jacob with Abraham and Isaac as heirs of the same promise.
