At the beginning, Michael and Gabriel were appointed as protectors of Israel. When angels of other nations accused Israel of wrongdoing, the two defended him, and the other angels came to fear them.
At Sinai, Israel received and accepted the Torah, fulfilling the condition for creation to endure. In days to come, God declared, “I have chosen the seed of Israel wholly, and I have inscribed him as My first-born son,” and sanctified Israel and the Sabbath forever. At the Tower of Babel, Hebrew was reserved for Israel when each nation was assigned a distinct language.
