God

Also known as: the Lord / the Supreme One · Role: deity · First appears: The Translation Of Enoch

At creation, God brought the world into being through Bet and ten Sayings, creating the heavens and earth, light and darkness, and many other things. The account describes seven heavens and seven earths, a primordial light later concealed, and the creation of the world for God’s glory. God made the first man from dust, formed Eve from Adam’s body as his companion, placed Adam in the Garden of Eden, and celebrated his wedding with Eve. God showed Adam the history of mankind and the earth; after Adam’s fall, God led him through different earths and protected him as he left Paradise. God cursed the ground because of Cain, then pardoned him in part, marked and afflicted him, and later accepted his penitence.

In the time of Enoch, God told him to warn the watchers that they would have no peace, then appointed him Metatron, prince and chief over the princes in God’s realm. After adding seven days to the time of grace, God brought the deluge upon the earth. Later, God confounded the builders’ language at Babel, punished them according to their conduct, and cast lots with the seventy angels over the nations; Israel fell to God’s lot.

God’s relationship with Abraham is presented as a close one: the world was created for his merits, and God sustained him in prison and rescued him from the fiery furnace. God promised Abraham’s seed the land, told him of the judgment of Sodom and Gomorrah, and agreed to spare the cities if ten righteous people were found there. At the Akedah, God commanded Abraham to offer Isaac, then stopped the sacrifice and promised Abraham numerous descendants and blessings. God accepted the ram offered in Isaac’s place; later, God forgave Abraham and commanded that he be taken into Paradise. In the account of Isaac’s threatened sacrifice, Isaac is described as saying, “The covenant is broken, whereof Thou didst speak to him, saying, 'For in Isaac shall thy seed be called,' and saying, 'My covenant will I establish with Isaac,' for the slaughtering knife is set upon his throat.” God also prevented Isaac from carrying out his intention to curse Jacob, appointed Michael guardian angel of Jacob and his descendants, and blessed Levi through Michael.
