The Legends of the Jews, Volume I

Michael

Also known as: the archangel · Family: Angels · Role: archangel · First appears: The First Things Created

Michael and Gabriel were appointed as protectors of Israel, defending him when angels of other nations accused him. God consumed the angels under Michael, sparing him alone. Later, Michael carried Abraham over the earth and told him that a soul had been saved through Abraham’s prayer. When Abraham’s own soul was taken, Michael carried it to heaven.

When Michael wrestled with Jacob, he injured Jacob by touching his thigh. God then appointed Michael guardian of Jacob and his descendants. After Jacob demanded a blessing, Michael blessed him, said his name would become Israel, and acknowledged that Jacob’s blessing was rightfully his. Michael also took Levi into heaven and presented him to God, who blessed him.
