Gods and Fighting Men

Tuireann

Family: Sons of Tuireann · Role: father of the three sons of Tuireann · First appears: The Gods · Lugh of the Long Hand · The Sons of Tuireann · Part 1

In the story of Lugh, Tuireann is the father of Brian, Iuchar, Iucharba and their sister Ethne, and the son of Ogma. His sons and the three sons of Cainte, including Cian and Cu, were enemies, and their meetings led to fighting.

When Brian and his brothers set out seeking the fine, Tuireann warned them that it would bring “your death and your destruction.” At Teamhair, Lugh accepted the fine but demanded the cooking-spit and three shouts still owed. Tuireann gave him the spit and asked for the healing skin for his children; Lugh refused. After Brian and his two brothers died, Tuireann lamented his three sons, lost his strength and died.
