The Hawaiian Romance of Laieikawai

Kihanuilulumoku

Role: god · First appears: Chapter XV

In Chapter XV, after Laieikawai and Aiwohikupua’s sisters returned to Paliuli, Kahalaomapuana ordered Kihanuilulumoku, their god, to prepare for battle. In Chapter XVI, she summoned him and commanded him to destroy any force sent by Aiwohikupua, warning him to beware of Kalahumoku. He killed the first eleven men and successive forces, totaling eight times forty warriors; Snipe and Turnstone escaped by flying away in their bird bodies.

In Chapter XXIV, after Waka taunted Laieikawai, Kihanuilulumoku carried her and her companions on his tongue to the uplands of Olaa. In Chapter XXVII, Kahalaomapuana entered inside him and journeyed through the ocean toward The Shining Heavens. He raised his tail, sending waves over the cliffs and frightening Kaeloikamalama and Mokukelekahiki, then threw Kahalaomapuana onto Kaeloikamalama’s neck.
