The Eddas

Thjasse

Also known as: Thiassi · Family: Jötuns · Role: Jötun · First appears: Elder Edda · The Lay of Grimnir · Part 1

In Brage’s Talk, Section II, Thjasse came in the guise of an eagle, seized Idun and carried her to Thrymheim. While he was out at sea, Loki turned Idun into a nut and flew away with her. The asas slew Thjasse within the gates of Asgard.

In Section III, Thjasse is named as a son of Olvalde, alongside Ide and Gang; after their father died, the three divided his gold by taking equal numbers of mouthfuls. Skadi is his daughter, and Odin cast Thjasse’s eyes into heaven and made two stars of them. In the Lay of Harbard, Thor boasts that he slew Thiassi, son of Allvaldi, and cast his eyes into the sky.

In the Poetical Diction, Thjasse is again described as taking Idun from the asas. It also tells that Loki struck him with a hard rod and they became stuck together; later, Loki flew as a falcon while Thjasse pursued him as an eagle, until the gods’ fire scorched the giant. Morn is named as his child.
