The Five Books of Moses

Jethro

Family: Midian · Role: priest; father-in-law of Moses · First appears: Exodus 3

Jethro, priest of Midian and father-in-law of Moses, employed Moses to keep his flock, as recorded in Exodus 3: “Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian:”

In Exodus 18, Jethro came into the wilderness with Zipporah, Gershom, and Eliezer and brought them to Moses. He worshipped God with sacrifices and acknowledged that the LORD was greater than all gods. He then advised Moses to delegate judgment by appointing capable subordinate rulers, saying, “Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee”. Moses allowed Jethro to depart, and Jethro returned to his own land.
