Pausanias' Description of Greece

Phrixus

Family: Greek mythology · Role: hero · First appears: Book 1 · Chapter 24

In Book 1, Chapter 24, Phrixus is identified as the son of Athamas and as having been carried to Colchi by a ram. After arriving there, he sacrifices the ram, perhaps to the god called Laphystius by the Orchomenians.

Book 9, Chapter 34 recounts that when Athamas was going to sacrifice Phrixus and Helle, Zeus sent a golden-fleeced ram on whose back the children escaped. Afterwards, Phrixus returned from Colchi according to one account; according to another, it was Presbon, his son by the daughter of Æetes. The sons of Thersander, Haliartus and Coronus, conceded the kingdom of Athamas to the returning heir and his descendants.
