The Legends of the Jews, Volume II

Asher

Family: Jacob's Family · Role: father of Serah · First appears: The Wives Of The Sons Of Jacob

In the year of Joseph’s misfortune, Asher married Adon, daughter of Ephlal; after Adon died childless, he married Hadorah, daughter of Abimael. His daughter was Serah. When Joseph’s brothers learned he lived and ruled Egypt, Serah sang the news to Jacob, calling Joseph her uncle.

At Raamses, Jacob summoned his sons and blessed Asher with beautiful women sought in marriage by kings and high priests. During the hostile enterprise against Joseph, Asher did not want to take part, but Dan and Gad forced him into it. Asher’s grandsons were Heber and Malchiel. In the hundred and twenty-fifth year of his life, he died after sinking into sweet sleep; his sons buried him with his fathers in Hebron, as he had commanded. At Moses’ return, Serah recognized him as the promised redeemer when she heard that his words matched those Asher had quoted, and the people believed in him.
