The Legends of the Jews, Volume II

Gad

Family: Joseph's Family · Role: one of Joseph's brethren · First appears: Joseph Hated By His Brethren

Joseph’s report about the flock made Gad and his brethren hate Joseph, and Gad was especially wrathful. When Joseph was cast into the pit, Gad and Simon raised their hands against him, but he took refuge behind Zebulon. In the same year as Joseph’s misfortune, Gad married Uzit. Later, he and Dan forced Naphtali and Asher to join a hostile enterprise against Joseph, though they had wanted no part in it.

In his testament, Gad confessed that he hated Joseph and often longed to kill him. He also said that a liver sickness God inflicted on him would have killed him without Jacob’s prayers; after eleven months, he recovered. Gad died peacefully, and five years later his sons carried his remains to Hebron to be buried with his fathers.
