The Metamorphoses of Ovid

Tethys

Family: Divine · Role: sea goddess · First appears: Fable 18

Tethys is a divine sea goddess, the daughter of Cœlus and Earth and the wife of Oceanus. In fable 18, she is Phaëton’s elder kin; “ignorant of the destiny of her grandson,” she removed what stood in their way before Phaëton and his companions took to the air. She was also the mother of Liriope and Eurynome.

In fable 22, Juno descended to the sea and appealed to Tethys and Oceanus to expel the constellations; “The Gods of the sea granted her request.” Later, Tethys pitied Æsacus as he fell, received him softly, and covered him with feathers as he swam through the sea. In fable 101, she and Oceanus received Glaucus, purified him, and removed his mortality.
