The Metamorphoses of Ovid

Juno

Also known as: daughter of Saturn / spouse of the great Thunderer / the daughter of Saturn / the royal Juno / the unrelenting wife of Jupiter · Family: Gods · Role: goddess · First appears: Fable 8

Juno, the daughter of Saturn and sister and wife of Jupiter, appears in Fable 14 as his wife when he gives Io to her as a gift despite his reluctance. Juno then entrusts Io to Argus for guarded custody. After Mercury kills Argus in Fable 16, Juno places his eyes on her peacock’s feathers. In Fable 17, she ends Io’s punishment, restores her human form, and allows her to be worshipped in Egypt as Isis.

After Io shines among the stars, Juno demands in Fable 22 that Tethys and Ocean expel the constellations, and they grant her request. In Fable 33, she disguises herself as Beroë and persuades Semele to ask Jupiter to appear in the full majesty he shows Juno. In Fable 34, after Tiresias confirms Jupiter’s claim in their contest, she condemns him to eternal blindness. In Fable 35, she punishes Echo for delaying her while Jupiter’s mistresses escaped, limiting Echo to repeating the last words she hears.

Later, Juno’s anger falls on Ino and her attendants, whom she transforms as they attempt to follow Ino; in Fable 57, she banishes Latona from the world. In Fable 66, her anger brings a devastating pestilence upon Ægina. When the birth of Hercules is near in Fable 79, she asks Ilithyïa to withhold help from Alcmena, and Ilithyïa uses a spell to impede the delivery.
