The Story of the Volsungs

Sorli

Family: Giukings · Role: son · First appears: Chapter XL · How Gudrun cast herself into the Sea, but was brought ashore again

In Chapter XL, Sorli is named with Hamdir and Erp as a son of Gudrun and King Jonakr. In Chapter XLIII, as he and Hamdir travel to avenge Swanhild, they meet Erp, who offers to help; they reject his offer and slay him. They then attack King Jormunrek, with Hamdir cutting off his hands and Sorli his feet.

A one-eyed man advises that the brothers be stoned, and they are killed; their deaths bring the Giuking line to an end. The Lay of Hamdir tells of the brothers’ vengeance and deaths, while The Whetting of Gudrun tells how Gudrun urges them to avenge Swanhild, who was raised with them.
