Hamdir

In Chapter XL, Gudrun and Jonakr had Hamdir, Sorli and Erp, and Swanhild was raised with them. In Chapter XLII, Gudrun urged Hamdir and his brothers to avenge their sister, slain by Jormunrek. Hamdir reminded her that she had not praised Gunnar and Hogni when they slew Sigurd. Before the brothers departed, she gave them drink and war gear; Hamdir told her, “this is our last parting.”

In Chapter XLIII, Hamdir and Sorli rejected Erp’s offer to help and slew him on the way. They attacked Jormunrek, and Hamdir cut off his hands while Sorli cut off his feet. An unnamed one-eyed man advised that they be stoned, and they were killed; their deaths, with Erp’s, ended the Giuking line. The Whetting of Gudrun and the Lay of Hamdir tell these events again.
