Greek Mythology

Palamedes

Role: hero · First appears: Apollodorus, Library 2.1

🌐 Also appears in: The Aeneid (as Palamedes)

Clymene became the wife of Nauplius, who became the father of Palamedes and Oeax. When Odysseus feigned madness to avoid the war, Palamedes exposed him; in fear for Telemachus, Odysseus confessed that his madness was pretended and went to the war. Palamedes had followed him and, snatching Telemachus from Penelope’s bosom, drawn his sword as if he would kill him.

Later, Odysseus falsely implicated Palamedes by planting a letter and gold. Agamemnon read the letter and “delivered up Palamedes to the allies to be stoned as a traitor”; another account names Agamemnon as Odysseus’s accomplice in Palamedes’s murder.
