Frey
Also known as: Frev · Family: Vanir · Role: god · First appears: Elder Edda · The Lay of Grimnir · Part 2
Afterward, Njord begat Frey in Noatun. In the Lay of Skirnir, Frey saw Gerd in Jotunheim and became troubled because he longed for her; he asked his longtime friend and attendant Skirnir to seek her hand, giving him a steed and sword for the journey. Gerd promised to meet him in the grove at Barri nine nights later, and the Lay of Hyndla says Frey took her as his wife. In the Fooling of Gylfe, Skadi calls him her son, and Skirnir is sent as his messenger to obtain the fetter Gleipner.
In the Fooling of Gylfe, Frey again asks Skirnir to court Gerd for him and gives him his sword; Gerd promises to come to Bar-Isle nine nights later for their wedding. There, Frey fights Bele unarmed and slays him with a hart’s horn. He later attends Æger’s feast at Asgard; in Poetical Diction, the treasures given to him include Skidbladner and a boar. Har foretells in the Fooling of Gylfe that at Ragnarok Frey will fight Surt and fall because he no longer has the sword he gave Skirnir.
