Njord

Also known as: Niord / Niörd · Family: Vanir · Role: god · First appears: Elder Edda · The Lay of Grimnir · Part 2

In the Song of the Sun, Niord’s nine daughters engrave runes, with Radvor the eldest and Kreppvor the youngest. In the Fooling of Gylfe, Njord is given by the vans as a hostage to the gods, who receive Honer in his stead; Njord establishes peace between the gods and the vans, then takes Skadi to wife. They agree to spend nine nights in Thrymheim and three in Noatun.

At Noatun, Njord afterward begets Frey and Freyja. In Brage’s Talk, Skadi chooses Njord as her husband under the asas’ settlement, identifying him by his feet. Later, Njord and Skadi are among those who visit Æger for the feast after his invitation.
