The Five Books of Moses

Shem

Role: son of Noah · First appears: Genesis 5

When Noah was five hundred years old, he begat Shem, Ham, and Japheth. At the flood, Shem entered the ark with Noah, his brothers, and their wives. Two years after the flood, when Shem was one hundred years old, he fathered Arphaxad.

After the flood, Shem and his brothers had sons born to them. God blessed Shem and Noah’s other sons, commanding them to “Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth,” and established a covenant with them and their seed. Noah declared, “Blessed be the LORD God of Shem,” while Canaan was made his servant; he also declared that Japheth would dwell in Shem’s tents.

Shem’s children were Elam, Asshur, Arphaxad, Lud, and Aram. His line continued through Arphaxad, Salah, Eber, and Peleg, in whose days the earth was divided.
