Atalanta
Family: Arcadia · Role: daughter of Schoeneus · First appears: Apollodorus, Library 1.8
🌐 Also appears in: The Metamorphoses of Ovid (as Atalanta)
Atalanta is identified as the daughter of Schoeneus. Apollodorus also says that Iasus had her by Clymene, while Euripides calls her a daughter of Maenalus; Iasus exposed her because he wanted male children. When Rhoecus and Hylaeus tried to force her, she shot and killed them. At the games held in honor of Pelias, she wrestled with Peleus and won.
At Calydon, Atalanta was the first to wound the boar, followed by Amphiaraus, before Meleager killed it. Meleager awarded her the skin, and when the sons of Thestius seized her prize, he killed them and gave it back to her. Meleager desired to have a child by Atalanta, and later Melanion came to court her with golden apples from Aphrodite; she stopped to pick them up and lost the race, after which “So Melanion married her.”
Her marriage is also attributed to Hippomenes, according to Euripides. By Melanion, or by Ares, she had a son, Parthenopaeus.
