Greek Mythology

Ares

Family: gods · Role: god · First appears: Apollodorus, Library 1.3

🌐 Also appears in: The Iliad (as Mars) · The Odyssey (as Mars) · The Aeneid (as Mars) · The Metamorphoses of Ovid (as Mars) · Greek Tragedy — The Same Myth, Three Voices (as Ares)

In Apollodorus, Library 1.3, Zeus married Hera and fathered Ares, alongside Hebe and Ilithyia. In Library 1.4, Eos and Aphrodite were each said to have bedded with him; in Library 1.7, Hermes secretly rescued Ares. Ares fathered Oxylus by Protogenia, and Evenus, Molus, Pylus, and Thestius by another mother. He was also named the father of Meleager, Dryas, Ascalaphus, and Ialmenus.

In later sections, Ares was identified as the father of Diomedes by Cyrene, Cycnus by Pyrene, Harmonia, Parthenopaeus—whose father was given as Melanion or Ares—Alcippe, and Tereus. Cadmus served Ares for an eternal year as atonement for a slaughter, while Phlegyas was called Ares’s son by Dotis. Ares was also linked with Menoeceus, who slew himself before the gates. In Hesiod, Aphrodite bore him Panic and Fear; he gave Oenomaus arms and horses, and Penthesilia was called his daughter by Otrere.

In Apollodorus, Library 3.14, Halirrhothius attempted to violate Alcippe and was killed by Ares.
