Pryderi

Also known as: Gwri Wallt Euryn / Pryderi the son of Pwyll · Family: unknown · Role: son of Pwyll and Rhiannon · First appears: PWYLL PRINCE OF DYVED 4

Pryderi was the son of Pwyll and Rhiannon. On the night of his birth, he disappeared while the women watching him slept, but on the night of the first of May Teirnyon Twryv Vliant found him outside his door after rescuing a foal from a supernatural attacker. Teirnyon and his wife baptized him and named him Gwri Wallt Euryn, then recognized his likeness to Pwyll and sent him back; he was afterward reared by Teirnyon Twryv Vliant and Pendaran Dyved, who were both his foster-fathers. When he desired a wife, he chose Kicva.

In Branwen, Bendigeid Vran commanded that his head be cut off. Pryderi was later the cousin and friend of Manawyddan, and was married to Kicva; the four of them, with Rhiannon, shared such friendship that they would not part by night or day. After their court and dwellings vanished in a supernatural mist, Pryderi and Manawyddan returned to Dyved, and Pryderi offered him Rhiannon and the seven Cantrefs where she dwelt. He declared that, even in the dawn of youth, he would keep faith with Manawyddan.

At the castle, Pryderi became magically fixed to a golden bowl, with his hands stuck to it and his feet to the slab; when night came, the castle vanished with him. Llwyd said that he had taken revenge on Pryderi for Gwawl and had made him wear the knockers of his palace around his neck. Later, swine sent from Annwn by Arawn led to conflict with Gwydion, and Pryderi asked Math to restrain him before attacking his forces. The combat followed, and to secure peace Pryderi gave Gwrgi Gwastra and twenty-three other sons of nobles as hostages.
