Math the son of Mathonwy
Also known as: Math · Family: Gwynedd · Role: lord of Gwynedd · First appears: MATH THE SON OF MATHONWY 1
As lord of Gwynedd, Math is elder-kin to Gilvaethwy and Eneyd, his nephews and the sons of his sister. In chapter 1, Goewin was continually with him, while Math and Pryderi became enemies when Pryderi attacked them and combat took place.
In chapter 2, Math learned that the attack had been made by his nephews, Gwydion and Gilvaethwy. He courted Goewin, telling her, “As for thee, I will take thee to be my wife, and the possession of my dominions will I give unto thy hands.” Arianrod addressed him as “Lord,” and Gwydion remained connected to him in another relation. In chapter 3, Math was a patron to Llew Llaw Gyffes and had another relation with Gwydion.
By chapter 4, Gwydion showed fealty to Math, declaring that he would not rest until he had tidings of his nephew. Llew Llaw Gyffes likewise showed fealty, telling Math that the time had come for retribution against the one by whom he had suffered.
