The Mabinogion

Gwawl

Also known as: Gwawl the son of Clud / the son of Clud · Family: Gwawl's household · Role: suitor · First appears: PWYLL PRINCE OF DYVED 3

Gwawl, the son of Clud, a man of great power and wealth, came as Rhiannon’s suitor and asked Pwyll for her, declaring, “The lady whom best I love is to be thy bride this night; I come to ask her of thee, with the feast and the banquet that are in this place.” Rhiannon agreed to become Gwawl’s bride “this night twelvemonth,” while secretly arranging to escape the marriage.

A year later, at Heveydd Hen’s palace, Pwyll trapped Gwawl in the magical bag and signalled his knights, who seized Gwawl’s household and cast them into his prison. That night, Gwawl accepted a covenant forbidding revenge, gave sureties, and was released along with his men. In a later chapter, Llwyd’s friendship with Gwawl led him to cast a charm in revenge for what had happened to him.
