Annas
Family: Jewish authorities · Role: former high priest · First appears: Luke 3
Annas is a former high priest among the Jewish authorities. In Luke 3, he is named alongside Caiaphas when the word of God came to John the Baptist. In John 18, Jesus was led to him first, as he was Caiaphas’s father-in-law, and Annas sent Jesus bound to Caiaphas, “the high priest that same year.”
By Acts 4, Annas was gathered at Jerusalem with Caiaphas and others when Peter and John, the son of Zebedee were questioned about their healing power. The council commanded them not to speak or teach in Jesus’s name, then threatened them and let them go because the people glorified God for what had been done.
