Bede's Ecclesiastical History

Wilbrord

Also known as: Clement · Role: archbishop · First appears: Book III · Chap. XIII

In Book III, during Acca’s journey to Rome, Acca and his bishop Wilfrid stayed for some time with Wilbrord, archbishop of the Frisians. Acca often heard Wilbrord tell of the wonders wrought at the relics of Oswald.

Around 692, Egbert sent Wilbrord among other missionaries to preach to foreign nations, and Pippin sent them to Frisland, protecting and supporting their work. “in a short time they converted many from idolatry to the faith of Christ.” In 696, Wilbrord went to Rome to receive Sergius’s licence and blessing to preach among the Frisian nations; Sergius consecrated him archbishop over the Frisians, gave him the name Clement, and sent him back. Pippin then granted him a place for his episcopal see at Wiltaburg.
