Greek Mythology

Adrastus

Family: Argos · Role: king · First appears: Apollodorus, Library 1.8

🌐 Also appears in: Greek Tragedy — The Same Myth, Three Voices (as Adrastus)

In Apollodorus, Library 1.8, Adrastus is the parent of Deipyle and Aegialia. In Library 1.9, he is named among the children of Talaus, alongside Parthenopaeus, Pronax, Mecisteus, Aristomachus, and Eriphyle.

By Library 3.6, Tydeus had married Deipyle, while Polynices married Argia, another daughter of Adrastus. Adrastus promised to restore Tydeus and Polynices to their native lands, advocating war against Thebes while Amphiaraus opposed it; because Amphiaraus had once made peace with Adrastus after a dispute, the decision rested with him. Adrastus won the horse race against Eteoclus, who won the footrace, and in the war Adrastus alone was saved by his horse Arion.

Later, Aegialeus is identified as the son of Adrastus, and Eurydice as his daughter. The Epitome names Adrastus and Amphius as sons of Merops.
