Ithamar
Family: Israel · Role: son of Aaron · First appears: Exodus 6
In Exodus 6, Elisheba bore Ithamar to Aaron, alongside Nadab, Abihu, and Eleazar. In Exodus 28, Ithamar and his brothers were appointed with Aaron to minister to God in the priest’s office, and were anointed, consecrated, and sanctified for that service: “that they may minister unto me in the priest’s office.”
In Exodus 38, Ithamar counted the tabernacle’s materials according to Moses’ command for Levitical service. During Leviticus 10, Moses instructed Ithamar, Aaron, and Eleazar concerning the offerings and commanded them not to mourn publicly or leave the tabernacle, while God commanded them to abstain from wine and strong drink when entering it.
By Numbers 3, Ithamar remained among Aaron’s sons, the priests anointed and consecrated for service. God assigned the Levites to Aaron and his sons, Moses gave them the redemption money for Israel’s excess firstborn, and in Numbers 4 Ithamar was placed in charge of the Gershonite service and burdens at the tabernacle.
