The Peloponnesian War

Pythen

Family: Corinthian · Role: commander · First appears: Book 6 · Chapter 20 · Part 7

In Book 6, Pythen sailed with Gylippus across the Ionian Sea to Tarentum as one of the Corinthian commanders in the retreat from Sicily. In Book 7, at Himera, he was with Gylippus as they persuaded the Himeraeans to join the war and arm the seamen.

Later, Pythen commanded the centre of the Syracusan fleet, with Sicanus and Agatharchus each leading a wing. The fleet fought the Athenians across the harbour; after the Syracusans and their allies prevailed, they recovered their dead and wrecks and set up a trophy.
