The Myth of Hiawatha, and Other Oral Legends

the two strange females (Jeebi legend)

Also known as: the two Jeebi-ug · Role: ghosts · First appears: The Jeebi; or, Two Ghosts

One winter evening in The Jeebi; or, Two Ghosts, the hunter's wife (Jeebi legend) welcomed the two strange females into the lodge. They revealed that the Great Spirit had sent them from the land of the dead to test the living, saying, “We come from the land of the dead to test mankind, and to try the sincerity of the living.” They had been allotted three moons for the trial.

The females talked with the hunter (Jeebi legend) and his wife, gave them instructions about a future life, and blessed them. When the wife’s anger showed that their presence had become irksome, they announced their departure; the couple heard the door open and shut, but never saw the two Jeebi-ug again.
