Xenophon's Hellenica

Timotheus

Family: Athenians · Role: admiral · First appears: Book 5, section 4, part 5/5

In 375 B.C., the Athenians appointed Timotheus admiral and sent him on a cruise around the Peloponnesus. He captured Corcyra without changing its laws or depriving its inhabitants of their freedom. At Alyzia, he defeated Nicolochus’s fleet and set up a trophy; later, when Nicolochus returned, Timotheus refused to put out to meet him, and Nicolochus set up a trophy nearby.

In 374–373 B.C., after peace was established, Timotheus was ordered to sail home. On the voyage, he landed Zacynthian exiles on their native soil, prompting a complaint from the Zacynthian city party. In 373 B.C., the Athenians elected him admiral of a fleet intended to assist Corcyra, but, judging that he was wasting time for the coastal voyage, they deposed him and appointed Iphicrates in his stead.
