Rho AI — the assistant inside the app
Rho AI is built into Rho MD for desktop (from 1.4.12). It reads your library, tidies it, searches the web and shows its sources, converts Word and PDF files to Markdown, and turns a table into a report with a chart. The model is hosted by Rho: sign in and it works, with no API key to set up. This page covers what it does, how to open it, and its limits.
Opening it
The ✦ Rho AI view in the sidebar. With no conversation open, the panel shows one line about what it is and four groups of starters — click one and the example lands in the input with the part in angle brackets selected for you to change:
| Group | Starters |
|---|---|
| Ask | what my notes say about ‹topic› · which notes mention ‹thing› · summarise the current document · the tensions in this document |
| Capture | save this web page as a note · save and summarise this YouTube video's transcript · add this to the wiki |
| Organize | check what is untidy in my library · tidy ‹folder› · write an index page for ‹folder› |
| Office | turn this table into a report · convert this Word file to Markdown · export as Word |
You can also just type; the starters are optional.
What it does
Answers from your library
Rho AI sees the document you have open and the related notes in your library, and cites them as clickable links. It has memory: facts confirmed in a conversation, and lessons of the form "that did not work, this did" — lessons can be reviewed, forgotten or exported from Settings.
Captures pages and videos
- Web pages: give it a link and it saves the article as a Markdown note with title, source and date; a page whose text a plain fetch cannot reach can be rendered in Rho's own browser window and read from there.
- YouTube: give it a video link and it saves the transcript as a note with its source, then summarises it as you ask.
- Captured material goes to the library's
Rawfolder; distilled pages go toWiki. Your own notes are never touched.
Keeps the library in order
- Check-up: the
Tidystarter reports five kinds of untidiness (orphan pages, duplicate sources, folders without an index…) and lists what it intends to do; nothing happens until you confirm. - Tidying: finds a folder or note by name; renames and moves while rewriting the links that point at it; writes a folder's index page (a hand-written one is never overwritten); archives to the recycle bin instead of deleting.
- Distilling: turns a source note into a wiki page, one page per source, keeping a copy before it replaces anything.
Office work
- Table → report: reads a table from the open document or a file, filters, groups and totals it, and delivers a report document with tables and charts whose totals are checked by the program.
- Word / PDF: converts
.docxor PDF into Markdown in your library; exports Markdown to.docx. - Delivery: hands a finished document to your mail client or reveals it in the file manager.
- Citation check: verifies each entry of a reference list — DOI, title — against the record.
Searches the web
"Rho search" runs on Rho's servers; results come with source links and the answer says which page each point rests on. Each plan includes a monthly number of searches (below).
Writes interactive documents
Describe what you want and Rho AI writes a Rho-format interactive document (sliders, charts, formulas, timelines…). It streams into the editor line by line and ends as an unsaved draft — saving is your call. It can also make targeted edits to an existing document.
Allowance and plans
| Plan | Rho AI |
|---|---|
| Free | 10 trial requests per signed-in account |
| Pro | No Rho AI beyond the 10 trial requests |
| Pro+AI | 30M tokens a month, 3M a day; 1,000 Rho searches a month |
| Max | 200M tokens a month, no daily ceiling; 5,000 Rho searches a month |
Usage is shown under Settings › Account. When an allowance is used up, the conversation says so and when it resets (the daily allowance resets at midnight UTC). A long task — reading many pages, writing a long document — uses far more tokens than a question and answer.
Plans are bought and switched in the app under Settings › Account; see pricing. There is no bring-your-own-key option: Rho runs the model.
It asks before it changes anything
Write actions — editing a document, saving a file, moving a note — raise an "Allow Write Action?" dialog first; read-only work does not. Settings has an "always allow writes" switch; irreversible actions such as delivering or publishing still ask even with it on.
For a harder question, Think harder at the top of the chat runs this conversation at a deeper reasoning level (with a daily limit).
Privacy
- The conversation, the open document and the notes it cites are sent as context to Rho's hosted model; your library itself stays on your machine.
- Web searches are made by Rho's servers; Rho does not keep the query, it only counts searches per account.
