Traditions of the Tinguian

Asigtanan

First appears: Tale 31

In Tale 31, the king and queen gave Asigtanan and Ganinawan dresses but no bracelets or rings. At Pindayan, Iwaginan and Indayo drank basi with the girls, and they all slept in one room. Soon the spirit helpers seized Asigtanan and Ganinawan as hawks and carried them to Pindayan, where Iwaginan and Indayo married them.

Not long after, Kanag and Dagoláyan took the girls home and married them instead: “Kanag married Asigtanan and Dagoláyen married Ganinawan.” When Iwaginan and Indayo tried to take the girls back, Kanag and Dagoláyan refused. The girls did not learn until then that Asigtanan was Dagoláyan’s sister and Ganinawan was Kanag’s sister; their mothers were Aponigawani and Aponibolinayen, respectively.
