Traditions of the Tinguian

Ganinawan

First appears: Tale 31

In Tale 31, the king and queen gave Ganinawan and Asigtanan dresses but no bracelets or rings. At Pindayan, Ganinawan and Asigtanan drank basi with Iwaginan and Indayo, and all four slept in one room. The spirit helpers seized the girls as hawks and carried them to Pindayan, where Iwaginan and Indayo married them.

Not long after, Kanag and Dagoláyan took the girls home and married them instead: Dagoláyan married Ganinawan, and Kanag married Asigtanan. When Iwaginan and Indayo tried to take the girls back, Kanag and Dagoláyan refused. Tale 31 says Ganinawan was Kanag’s sister, and that her mother was Aponibolinayen.
