Scaurus
Family: Roman · Role: Roman general · First appears: Book I, Chapter 6
In Book I, Chapter 6, Scaurus, a Roman general sent from Armenia by Pompey while he fought Tigranes, intervened at Jerusalem when Aristobulus was being besieged by Aretas (king of Arabia). Scaurus also caused Metellus and Lollius to leave the place, while “Aristobulus's three hundred talents had more weight with him than the justice of the cause.”
In Book I, Chapter 7, Pompey appointed Scaurus governor over Syria, Judea, and the neighboring countries as far as Egypt and the Euphrates. In Chapter 8, Hyrcanus assisted him with provisions through Antipater, whom Scaurus sent to Aretas (king of Arabia) because he knew him, to persuade the king to pay for peace. Aretas (king of Arabia) gave Scaurus three hundred talents, after which Scaurus withdrew his army from Arabia; Gabinius was later sent to Syria as his successor.
