Esaias

Also known as: Esaias the prophet · Family: prophets · Role: prophet · First appears: Matthew 3

In Matthew 3, John the Baptist is linked with Esaias through the prophecy of a voice crying in the wilderness to prepare the Lord’s way. In Matthew 8, Esaias’s prophecy is presented as fulfilled in Jesus, who took infirmities and bore sicknesses. In Matthew 13, Jesus says Esaias’s prophecy is fulfilled among those who see and hear without understanding: “By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive.”

In Mark 7, Jesus identifies the Pharisees as hypocrites fulfilling Esaias’s prophecy. In Acts 28, Paul says, “Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers,” as Holy Ghost reveals that God’s salvation will be sent to the Gentiles. In Romans 15, Esaias prophesies that Jesus, the root of Jesse, will rise to reign over the Gentiles, in whom the Gentiles will trust.
