The Wars of the Jews

Sextus Caesar

Family: Roman · Role: president of Syria · First appears: Book I, Chapter 10

Sextus Caesar, a kinsman of Caesar, served as president of Syria. At Jerusalem, he ordered Hyrcanus to acquit Herod of the capital charge, and Hyrcanus dismissed it, being otherwise inclined to do so because he loved Herod. Sextus then appointed Herod general of Coelesyria and Samaria, making him formidable through both popular goodwill and his own power.

At Apamia, Cecilius Bassus treacherously killed Sextus Caesar, an act that caused civil war; Bassus then took authority over Sextus’s forces out of goodwill toward Pompey. As the war continued, Marcus arrived from Italy as Sextus’s successor.
