Plutarch's Lives

Archias

Family: Thebes · Role: polemarch · First appears: Pelopidas

As polemarch of Thebes, Archias employed Phillidas, who contrived to become secretary to Archias and Philip. Archias, Leontidas, and Philip were rich men of oligarchical principles who urged Phoebidas to surprise the Cadmea; he was opposed by Charon and Melon, who fought against Archias and Philip “having put on women's apparel over their breastplates.” Archias was also friends with his namesake, Archias the Hierophant of Athens, who was his friend and guest.

In the account involving Demosthenes, Archias was his enemy: after hearing that Demosthenes had taken sanctuary at the temple of Neptune in Calauria, he went there and tried to persuade him to accompany him to Antipater. Archias was counted among the disciples of Lacritus, and Polus of Aegina, the actor, was said to have been his scholar. In Aegina, he seized Hyperides, Aristonicus of Marathon, and Himeraeus by force from the temple of Aeacus.
