Plutarch's Lives

Antipater

Family: Macedon · Role: writer · First appears: Comparison of Alcibiades with Coriolanus

At Athens, Antipater’s terms were accepted, and a Macedonian garrison commanded by Menyllus was installed under his governorship; Menyllus was described as fair-dealing and an acquaintance of Phocion. After returning to public service, Demosthenes continued his opposition to Antipater and the Macedonians. When the temple no longer sheltered him, Demosthenes used concealed poison to escape Antipater’s soldiers. Antipater was counted among the enemies of Demosthenes and Eumenes.

Antipater called Phocion and Demades his “two friends at Athens,” while he treated Xenocrates with such dislike that he would not acknowledge him. Leonnatus and Macedonians from Asia joined him, and Alexander commanded him to keep a life-guard nearby; yet Alexander also feared Antipater and his sons, amid a faction raised against him by Olympias and Cleopatra. Antipater was the father of Iolaus, Cassander, and Phila in the supplied accounts, and Iolaus was Alexander’s chief cupbearer; another account calls Antipater the eldest son of Cassander, who killed his mother Thessalonica and expelled his brother Alexander. He also wrote about Aristotle after the philosopher’s death.
