Pausanias' Description of Greece

Hyrnetho

Family: Temenid · Role: daughter of Temenus · First appears: Book 2 · Chapter 19

In Book 2, Chapter 19, Temenus gave his daughter Hyrnetho in marriage to Deiphontes, whom he loved “more than all his children.” After Temenus’s death, Hyrnetho and Deiphontes opposed Temenus’s sons, including Cisus, in a political split; the army favored them over Cisus and his brothers.

In Book 2, Chapter 28, Cerynes and Phalces, Hyrnetho’s brothers, took her against her will. She rejected their marriage proposal and affirmed that Deiphontes was acceptable to her as a husband. As Phalces resisted Deiphontes, he pulled Hyrnetho too violently and killed her; she was pregnant. Deiphontes and their children—Antimenes, Xanthippus, Argeus and Orsobia—buried her at Hyrnethium and built a chapel in her memory.
