King Nentres
Also known as: King Nentres of Garlot · Family: Garlot · Role: king · First appears: Book I, Chapter II
Then, King Nentres of Garlot married Elaine. At Pentecost in Book I, Chapter VIII, he came to King Arthur’s feast at Carlion with seven hundred knights, but joined King Lot, King Uriens, and the other hostile kings in rejecting Arthur’s gifts, besieging his stronghold, and later agreeing that Arthur might meet them safely and return safely.
In Chapter XII, King Nentres swore with Duke of Cambenet, King Brandegoris, King Clariance, King of the Hundred Knights, King Lot, King Urience, King Idres, King Cradelmas, King Agwisance, and King Carados that “for weal nor woe, they should not leave other, till they had destroyed Arthur.” Together they raised a vast host, besieged Bedegraine, and advanced against King Arthur.
During the fighting, Sir Kay struck King Nentres down and gave his horse to Sir Griflet; King Lot then gave Nentres another horse after striking down Melot de la Roche. Nentres was also among the six kings held hard by Lucas, Sir Gwinas, Briant, and Bellias of Flanders, with help from Sir Kay and Sir Griflet. In Chapter XVI, he agreed with the other kings to keep their formation and never fail one another, “neither for life nor for death.”
